DAVAO CITY- The traditional yuletide holiday season culminated on a generally peaceful note sans any major untoward incident recorded, according to Philippine National (PNP) chief General Dionardo Carlos.

Carlos made the assessment during the opening hours of 2022 when the PNP Command Center in Camp Crame continued to consolidate field reports from Police Regional Offices nationwide.

He said “Overall, the situation remains generally peaceful throughout the country with no major untoward incidents that marred the traditional festive Christmas and New Year revelry.”

However, he said they are currently investigating four alleged stray bullet incidents in Ilocos Region, CALABARZON, Northern Mindanao, and Cordillera on New Year’s eve.

The top cop assured local PNP units of forensic and technical support from National Support Units to assist in the investigation.

Despite the reported incidents, Carlos noted a significant drop in the number of stray bullet incidents in New Year 2022 compared with the previous years.

“No stray-bullet deaths were reported during the entire holiday season,” Carlos said in a statement.

Carlos, meanwhile confirmed that the PNP is building-up cases against arrested gun holders involved in 17 incidents of illegal discharge of firearms.

Carlos also commended local PNP units backed by local government units (LGU) and force multipliers for the strict enforcement of local Executive Orders on firecracker prohibition that significantly resulted in lower firecracker-related injuries this year.

Apart from 80,188 force multipliers, the PNP has fielded a total of 32,179 police personnel for law enforcement and public safety operations during the holiday season.
