Davao City—Promising young chessers from Mindanao shine brightly in the ongoing Batang Pinoy 2022 in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur.

Cagayan de Oro City won three gold medals in the chess competition.

Leading the gold haul for the city of golden friendship is Zhaoyu Capilitan, an 11-year-old, sixth-grade student of Fr. William Masterson Elementary School

Capilitan won the gold in standard chess in the 11 and under category.

She also teamed up with Ashley Aya and Nicole Paquinol to win two more golds in team blitz and standard chess.

The school staff at Masterson Elementary School along Masterson Avenue, Upper Balulang, Cagayan de Oro City, led by sixth-grade math adviser Ma. Elena T. Romualdo, principal Jinnefer D. Espina, and Maricha Ubay-Ubay are very proud of her achievement.

Before her Batang Pinoy performance, Capilitan also won a gold medal in a chess tournament in Myanmar in 2019.

Aside from CDO chessers, Zamboanga City's National Master John Cyrus Borce also performed well in the Batang Pinoy National Championships.

Borce emerged as the under-15 standard chess category champion in the Batang Pinoy National Championships.

He scored five wins in five rounds.

In his chess category, 75 other players vied for the title.

Aside from the gold medal, Borce also won a bronze medal at Batang Pinoy.
