Gempero, Dormitorio rule, 10th Jong Guevarra Cup Open chess tourney
Davao City—Veteran chessers Reynaldo "Sano" Gempero and Joselito Dormitorio were the big winners in the 10th Annual. Jong Guevarra Cup Open Chess Tournament at the Jardin del Roca in Eden, Toril, on April 1 and 2.

Gempero, a native here, won the open division after scoring 5.5 points after six rounds of chess that featured 99 players.

He won $8,000 in cash and trophy as prizes.

The second place in the division went to National Master Macacuna Macala.

The third place went to NM Henry Lopez of Panabo City, Davao del Norte.

Dormitorio, for his part, won the blitz side event of the same tournament after scoring 7.5 points.

The second place in the side event went to Darwin Bermudez, who scored seven points.

The third place went to lawyer Jong Guevarra who organized the tournament.

Guevarra is pleased with the successful tournament after a chess summit at the same venue. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
