DAVAO CITY- Joint police and military operatives confiscated early morning Thursday, May 23 some P8.7 million shipment of smuggled cigarettes at Barangay Surawan checkpoint, Toril District in this city.

Task Force Davao (TFD) in its report said the cigarette shipment was seized at around 12:30 a.m at the Sirawan entry point.

TFD spokesman Major John Louie Dema-ala said the troops were manning a fixed checkpoint when they flagged a white Forward Wing Van that was traveling towards Davao City.

Dema-ala said upon inspection, the cargo van was found loaded with 303 master cases of assorted cigarettes worth P8.787 million.

The authorities confiscated the illegal items from the helper Dante Cabasan, 26 and the cargo van driver Dennick Earl Flores, 33, both residents of Cagayan de Oro City.

The two failed to show any documents of the cargoes.

TFD Commander Colonel Darren E. Comia commended the troops for their dedication and commitment in ensuring that no illegal items or contraband enter Davao City.

He said the consecutive apprehensions in the city’s entry points manifested the stringent security checks being implemented by the security forces to ensure the safety and security of every Dabawenyo.

The van and its cargoes, as well as the arrested individuals were placed under the custody of Toril Police Station and Bureau of Customs for proper disposition and filing of charges in violation of Republic Act 4712, an act amending certain sections of the Tariff and Customs Code of the Philippines.
