While the authorities led by Bureau of Immigration, PNP, alongside Philippine Army’s 10th Infantry Division implemented the mission orders against foreign nationals found to be in violation of the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940, the team uncovered alleged illegal mining activities in the area after the individuals failed to present the necessary permits and documents.
The operation further led to the discovery of mineral resources, heavy equipment, explosives, and Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) uniforms, indicating possible links to illicit mining networks.
Initial investigation revealed that the apprehended individuals, who are holders of tourist visas, have been overstaying and may be held liable for violations of Section 37(a)(9) in relation to Section 45(e) of the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940, as amended, for undesirability due to expired visas. Authorities are likewise preparing appropriate charges for possible violations of Republic Act 7942, or the Philippine Mining Act of 1995.
Further investigation disclosed that the foreign nationals have allegedly been engaged in small-scale illegal mining operations in the area for an extended period, involving the extraction of gold and other mineral ores reportedly intended for smuggling outside the country.
“The 10ID fully supports the Bureau of Immigration 11 in the lawful service of its mission orders. This operation underscores the importance of inter-agency coordination, as it not only addressed immigration violations but also exposed illegal activities that threaten our natural resources and national security,” said Major General Alvin Luzon, Commander of 10ID.
Authorities continue to conduct deeper investigation into the extent of the illegal mining activities and possible security implications, as efforts intensify to curb unlawful activities involving foreign nationals.
