January is Bible month in Davao City

Davao City declared the month of January as Bible Month following the passage of an ordinance Thursday (Dec. 5) by the 20th members of the City Council.

First District Councilor Pilar Braga, proponent of said ordinance said that this is an annual observance promoting the teachings, values, and wisdom of the Bible as part of Davao’s cultural and moral development.

Braga said the ordinance aims to encourage reflection on the teachings of the Bible and its relevance in promoting peace,unity, and moral integrity in the city; to promote interfaith understanding and respect for religious diversity within the city; and to inspire community engagement through organized activities that honor the BIble and encourage values formation across all sectors.

During the Bible month, the activities are encouraged across the city include local Bible-believing institutions/organizations and schools shall be encouraged to hold special bible studies, youth programs, and family-centered activities that emphasize values formation; the city government, in partnership with the private sector, bible-believing institutions/organizations, and Non-Government Organizations shall coordinate city-wide events such as bible exhibits, poster-making contests, seminars, and reflections that promote unity, moral values and other activities.

Under the ordinance, all barangay councils in the city are encouraged to support and participate in bible month activities to foster a spirit of community, love, and service.

The office of the mayor through the moral recovery council in coordination with the National Month Ecumenical Team has been tasked to implement the said ordinance.

These agencies shall encourage collaboration among educational, cultural, and bible-believing institutions/organizations to ensure the effective observance of bible month.

Funds shall be allocated for the effective implementation of the ordinance and subsequent annual budget shall be necessary subject to the accounting rules and regulations.

The ordinance shall take effect fifteen days after its publication in any newspaper of general circulation in the city.
