In a statement dated October 29, Panelo described the discussions as premature and pointed to concerns over the impartiality of the Senate Impeachment Court, the constitutionality of lowering the threshold for conviction, and alleged violations of due process.
He also questioned the Senate majority’s response to the prosecution’s withdrawal of Articles I and IV, arguing that the move resulted in wasted time and public funds.
Panelo further cited a Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey, which he said showed that only 28% of Filipinos trusted the Senate Impeachment Court to deliver a fair judgment, with a net trust rating of -7%.
He also argued that replacing Duterte would not address the country’s pressing economic concerns, including rising inflation, the worsening effects of the projected Super El Niño, slower economic growth, and the peso’s continued depreciation against the US dollar.
According to Panelo, the impeachment proceedings highlight what he described as the administration and its allies’ prioritization of political maneuvering over issues affecting ordinary Filipinos, particularly food affordability, economic stability, and the country’s future.
