“The president [Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.] wants more medals in Paris,” POC President Rep. Abraham “Bambol,” Tolentino said.
Tolentino claimed President Marcos is well aware of the successful campaign that weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz Naranjo led to the nation's first Olympic gold medal last year in Tokyo. Tokyo was the most prosperous Olympics for the Philippines in over a century, thanks to the silver and bronze medals won by the boxers Carlo Paalam, Nesthy Petecio, and Eumir Felix Marcial.
"When I mentioned to the President how many Olympic medals we had delivered during the previous government, he responded that it wasn't enough, and he wanted more," Tolentino added.
Consequently, I replied, "Yes, Mr. President, we'll do more at the Paris Olympics."
Although he avoided specifics about his perspective on Paris qualifications, he expressed hope for a "bountiful" Paris campaign with the POC and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Malacanang's sports arm that provides funding for the nation's sports infrastructure.
The secret, according to Tolentino, is that things are improving between the two parties.(Romeo Braceros Jr.)
