PH gets 3rd place in FIDE Chess Olympiad for PWD
DAVAO CITY--In the FIDE Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities held at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Belgrade, Serbia, on Saturday, February 4, 2023, National Master Darry Bernardo put up another impressive performance to help the Philippine Chess team finish in third place.

The battle lasted 79 moves, and Bernardo defeated Kumar A. Naveen.

Bernardo displayed extraordinary tenacity to deliver a game-saving victory on the fourth board, which enabled the Filipinos to secure the 2-2 draw with India in the sixth and final round and a spot in a four-way tie for third place with 8.0 match points, the same output as India (fourth), Serbia 1 (fifth), and Uzbekistan (sixth).

The order was determined by the tie-break points they had accrued, though.

“Right now, I don’t have anything on my mind. I am just happy. We will just continue doing what we are doing so far.” said Bernardo, who won the individual gold medal on the fourth board with an undefeated record of 5.5 points in six outings on account of five wins and one draw.

The match between Fide Master Sander Severino and Kutwal Shashikant ended in a draw after 37 moves of the Caro-Kann Defense on Board 1, and the match between National Master Henry Roger Lopez and Gangolli Kishan split the points after 34 moves of the Queen's Gambit Declined on Board 2. Earlier, Playing Coach National Master James Infiesto lost to Inani Darpan after 57 moves of the Bishop Opening on Board 3 and the match between Fide Master Sander Severino.

"We do this for flag and nation," added Severino, who won an individual silver medal on the top board after amassing three victories and three draws.

The International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) World Online Chess Rapid Championship was won by Silay City, Negros Occidental player Severino in 2020, making him the first Filipino to do so.
