Ronel Suyom, who has the potential to be the "next big thing" in Philippine boxing was welcomed by Abraham "Bambol" Tolentino, head of the Philippine Olympic Committee.

Tolentino of Suyom, who paid the POC chief a courtesy call at the Knights Templar Ridge Hotel in Tagaytay City said, "It's a tremendous performance from a 17-year-old boxer from the South, and we're hopeful he may be our next Olympian in the future."

Suyom, a sought-after discovery from Agusan del Norte, displayed with pride the silver medal he won in the minimumweight division at the World Youth Championships in La Nucia, Spain, around his neck.

As his training and contests progress, "he can perform a lot better," Tolentino added.

Suyom is expected to continue the careers of bronze medalist Eumir Felix Marcial from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and silver medalists Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio.

It's interesting to note that in Tokyo, Paalam and Petecio also verified their medals. At the Asian championships in Amman, Jordan, a month ago, Petecio took home the featherweight bronze medal and Paalam the bantamweight gold.

India's Vishvanath Suresh defeated Suyom in the race for gold in La Nucia. He was one of six boxers the ABAP program director Don Abnett, Elias Recaido, and Elmer Pamisa sent to the global youth championships.

Along with Suyom, John Wayne Vicera at flyweight, Eljay Pamisa at bantam, John Paul Napales at featherweight, Crisaldy Beltran at lightweight, and Mark Ashley Fajardo at light welterweight also competed in La Nucia.(Romeo Braceros Jr.)
