Atillo in Wednesday’s AFP-PNP Press Corps briefing at The Royal Mandaya Hotel said that DepEd’s Memorandum Order 034 series of 2022 issued on July 11, 2022, stated that the schedule is equivalent to 206 days per Republic Act 11480, which amended Section 3 of RA No. 7797, or “An act to lengthen the school calendar from 200 days to not more than 220 days class days”.
“Unless there is no amendment to this information, the school year 2023-2024 will start from August 28, 2023 to June 28, 2024,” Atillo said.
He said all public schools will have their end of school year rites which include completion, recognition, moving-up ceremony, and graduation from July 10-14 . Last classes day will end on July 7, completing the 203 calendar days for the school year 2022-2023.
Atillo, meanwhile, clarified that private schools are not mandated to follow the agency’s order, adding that private schools are authorized to open a week prior to its official start of classes.
Given the schedule, Atillo admitted that they are receiving information that some parents and even students are complaining because of the short break and students have a little time to rest.
“We are greatly affected with pandemic, as you can see we have open classes prior to the pandemic , all of the sudden because of the pandemic, all the schedules were greatly affected,” Atillo said.
“We have to really respond appropriately, kasi there is a law that we have to strictly follow. There is this provision of the law na dapat ang number of school days will not be lesser than 200 days, so if we will not respond to that, therefore, we would be starting in a very negative footing,” Atillo said
Atillo, on the other hand, cannot yet confirm as to the figures of learners in the entire region who will be graduating this school year since the fourth grading examinations will still be conducted.
