NFEM reported that while the team conducted routine maritime patrol operations, joint forces monitored a suspicious motor banca approximately 8.5 nautical miles NW off the coast of Poblacion, Governor Generoso. At around 7:09 PM, the vessel failed to respond to standard maritime challenge procedures, prompting the patrol team to approach and conduct a Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) operation.
The operation led to the discovery of 1,246 master cases of undocumented cigarettes, with an estimated value of P52 million. The seizure constitutes a violation of Republic Act No. 10863, or the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act (CMTA) of 2016, in relation to Executive Order No. 245, which governs the exportation and importation of leaf tobacco and tobacco products.
The vessel was identified as M/B Bukal, manned by seven Filipino crew members. Initial investigation revealed that the motor banca is reportedly owned by a certain Mr. Latip Saipol, and the illicit cargo originated from Jolo, Sulu.
Following the apprehension, the vessel was escorted and towed to Captain Feranil Pier, Naval Station Felix Apolinario in Panacan, Davao City. Upon arrival, Joint operatives from NSWU7, PNP Regional Maritime Unit XI, Police Station 4 (Sasa), Davao City Police Office (DCPO), and BIR Revenue No.19 conducted the unloading, inventory, and proper documentation of the seized contraband.
The motor banca and confiscated cigarettes were subsequently turned over to BIR Revenue 19 for appropriate disposition, while the crew members were placed under the custody of Police Station 4 Sasa for the filing of appropriate charges.
This successful operation highlights the sustained commitment of Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao and its partner agencies to strengthen maritime law enforcement, combat smuggling activities, and ensure the security of the country’s maritime domain.
