“Let's give a huge shout out to the trainees of Davao City's Fishery Law Enforcement Team! I just wanted to take a moment to celebrate your dedication and passion for protecting our marine resources and keeping our coastal areas in check. Saludo ko ninyo,” Ocampo said in his message during the culmination of the 3-day training and deputization of FLET at Talomo Cemento Gym, Barangay Talomo, Friday (May 19).
Ocampo underscores fisheries’ vital role in the lives of many people in the coastal communities. However, he said some real challenges that fisheries may encounter such as illegal fishing practices and overexploitation.
“Dinhing sitwasyona mo musulod ug kinahanglan. Dinhe ninyo gamiton ang inyong nakat-onan ug ang pag-assert sa inyong katungod isip tigpanalipod sa atong kaisdaan ug kadagatan. Mao kini ang hagit sa kaninyo,” Ocampo said.
He said “as part of the Fishery Law Enforcement Team, you guys are going to be the real heroes - kamo ang Cardo Dalisay sa Ang Probinsyano o ang Jesus Nazareno sa Batang Quiapo - tackling those challenges head-on and making sure our marine resources are used sustainably.”
According to Ocampo, with the training they acquired, they also carry a great responsibility.
“Remember, as members of this team duna kamoy gahom sa balaod o power, pero ingon ni Spiderman - power comes with great responsibility,” he said.
“Your actions directly impact the well-being of our marine ecosystems, the sustainability of our fisheries, and the livelihoods of our coastal communities and all of us Davaoeños,” Ocampo further said.
The councilor, meanwhile, asked the enforcement team to treat everyone they encounter, be it fishermen or members of the community, with respect and empathy.
“Maminaw tas katarungan apan ipatuman ang balaod. Understand where they're coming from, and let's work together to find the best solutions,” he said.
“Your dedication and service shall pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future for our city and its marine resources,” Ocampo said.
