DepEd 11 official says teachers should not be blamed for Zamboanga school shooting
DAVAO CITY — Department of Education-Davao Region (DepEd 11) spokesperson Jenielito Atillo urged the public not to blame teachers for the recent school shooting in Zamboanga City that left two students dead.
Atillo made the statement in response to remarks from Palace Press Officer Claire Castro that appeared to point to teachers in relation to the incident.
“Do not blame the teachers,” Atillo said, during the Wednesday's Davao Peace and Security Press Corps briefing at The Royal Mandaya Hotel stressing that teachers should not be made a scapegoat over the shooting.
He said the focus should instead be on addressing the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensuring the safety and protection of students and school personnel.
The shooting, which occurred at a school in Zamboanga City, resulted in the deaths of two students and prompted renewed calls for stronger security measures in schools.
Atillo emphasized that teachers are part of the education system tasked with teaching and protecting learners and should not be singled out for blame over the incident.
