Office of Civil Defense (OCD) 11 reported that affected barangays included among others, Matina Pangi, Matina Crossing, Buhangin District , and Talomo.
A bridge in Purok 2, Barangay Callawa was also collapsed following heavy rains and flooding that hit the area.
The Davao City Police Office (DCPO) also reported a death of a 21-year old pump boy believed to be electrocuted and drowned to the flood at his residence in New San Isidro, Buhangin.
Early morning Monday, May 19, the Davao City Local Government unit declared suspension of classes and work to ensure the welfare and safety of Dabawenyos and to give way to clearing operations following the flooding incidents caused by heavy rainfall brought about by the ITCZ and easterlies which resulted in the overflow of the Matina and Bunawan Rivers.
Harvey Lanticse, the City Information Office head said that as of Monday afternoon affected individuals who temporarily took shelter and evacuation sites have begun returning to their homes.
He said clearing operations in affected barangays are currently underway in coordination with the Ancillary Services Unit, City Environment and Natural Resources Office, City Engineer’s Office ,CDRRMO, and Bureau of Fire Protection.
The City Social and Welfare Development Office (CSWDO) and the City Mayor’s Office, on the other hand, have already extended the necessary initial aid and food provisions to affected families, including assistance to the family of the reported casualty.
