2 kids die in Davao City fire

DAVAO CITY- Two children with autism spectrum were burned to death in a fire that destroyed 150 houses in Barangay 2-A, Magallanes, Davao City on Saturday night, July 13.

Davao City Police Office (DCPO) reported that the fatalities were identified as a 14 year old Roy Reteza and his cousin Rjay Lopez, 11.

Five persons were also injured in the fire that started 8:25 p. m. at the house of Charlene Puerto Lopez at Purok 2, Barangay 2-A, Magallanes.

Charlene's son Rjay and his cousin Roy were discovered by the responders inside the comfort room.

DCPO spokesman Captain Hazel Tuazon said that based on the initial count 203 families with 545 individuals have been rendered homeless.

Tuazon said 150 houses (initial count as of Sunday early morning) had been destroyed after firefighters declared fire out at 1:05 a. m.

The affected residents were taken to Magallanes Elementary School p and provided assistance by the city government.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause of the fire and the cost of damage was placed at P2.2 million.

Meanwhile, teams from the City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Health Office, Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office alongside the Office of the First Congressional District, barangay council, and other frontline agencies are already onsite to attend to the needs of the affected residents.

Hot meals are currently being served at the evacuation site.

Modular tents are also set up at the evacuation site for the residents affected by the fire.

The city has also set up a donation drop-off point for those who wish to send help and assistance for families affected by the fire incident.
