Davao Region flooding displaces thousands of families: OCD

DAVAO CITY- The shear line has brought torrential rains on Tuesday and Wednesday in Davao Region and displaced at least 44,888 families or 187, 108 persons, authorities confirmed.

Based on the data released by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) 11 on Wednesday afternoon, in Davao del Norte , flooding hit 68 areas in Davao de Oro and Davao del Norte.

In Davao de Oro, 5,959 families or 27,137 individuals have been affected ; 38,158 families or 156,540 persons in Davao del Norte, 3,331 persons or 751 families in Davao Oriental, and 20 families also affected in Davao Occidental.

OCD said of the 44,888 families affected, 1,990 or 6,709 persons are currently staying in evacuation centers.

Six landslides were also recorded in Davao de Oro barangays including Camanlangan in New Bataan town; Linda in Nabunturan; Gubatan in Maco; and in Monkayo town, brgys. Mt. Diwata,Haguimitan (Sitio Totoy), and Haguimitan particularly in Sitio Palo.

A total of 11 roads including nine in Davao de Oro and two in Davao del Norte are not passable to all types of vehicles due to landslide blockage.

Two bridges also are not passable to all types of vehicles due to scouring of bridge approach in Fatima Bridge at Fatima, New Bataan, Davao de Oro caused by heavy rainfall and overflowing of water and in San Pedro Bridge in Caraga, Davao Oriental.

OCD in its record said, a total of 34 municipalities in the region have declared class suspension and 24 towns had suspended work.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) already provided food packs amounting to P2,917,258 to 4,179  affected families.

Currently, only Barangay Cambanogoy in the municipality of Asuncion, Davao del Norte has declared a state of calamity due to the severe effects of  barangays and its residents.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Coast Guard identified a missing person as 14-year-old Cyrus Galabin, a resident of Purok 8, Barangay Tuganay, Carmen, Davao del Norte.

Galabin went missing while swimming at Tuganay Riverbank of said barangay on Wednesday morning.

PCG is asking all mariners and fisher folks transiting at the vicinity waters of Carmen and Panabo City and nearby areas to be on the look-out for flood victims and  to report immediately to the nearest Coast Guard Unit.
