36 stalls razed in Davao Public Market fire
DAVAO CITY: A total of 36 stalls of the makeshift section, building 2 of Toril Public Market In Toril District here were razed by a fire that started past midnight on Saturday, July 26, 2025.
Davao City Police Office (DCPO), reported the fire incident started at 12:15 a.m. but was reported only at 2:20 a. m. The responding firefighters were able to put out the fire at 3:42 a.m.
The affected stall was rented by Annaluz Ubongin, 47, married, a resident of Upper Piedad, Toril, Davao City.
Initial investigation conducted by Toril Police Station revealed that Bryan Valleanas Ortega, 38, a butcher and resident of Dahlia St, Toril, first noticed smoke coming from beside the market building, particularlyb from a stall rented by Ubongin.
Upon verification, Ortega noticed the fire rapidly spreading, which prompted him to seek help.
Jean Claude Van Rosales Flores, 34, single, a designated encoder of the market immediately sought assistance from Central 911.
Davao City Fire District spokesman and fire investigator Senior Inspector Russel Jake Maranon said the cause of the fire is still being investigated, including the total cost of damage.
Meanwhile, members of Toril Police Station provided area security and police visibility at the market to prevent possible looting incidents in the area.
Toril PNP said based on their monitoring there were no reported looting incidents in the fire scene.
Personnel from the Bureau of Fire Protection and Civil Security Unit also present in the area.
