Philippine Army's 4th Infantry Division reported that the troops were acting on a tip from concerned residents about reports of an ongoing extortion in the area.
The report said the prompt action of the soldiers disrupted the illegal activities and forced the NPA terrorists to scamper away, abandoning their criminal plans.
“Despite sustaining injuries while protecting the lives and freedom of others, these four soldiers under the 28th Infantry Battalion exemplified the highest standards of duty, resilience, and patriotism, " Major General Michele B. Anayron Jr., Commander of 4th ID said.
“There is a situation that needs to be addressed. These remaining terrorists have been a persistent threat, disrupting peace and endangering the well-being of the local population for decades now, " Anayron said.
Tactical Operations Group 10 and medical team were deployed to conduct tactical combat casualty care and to immediately evacuate all wounded aboard black hawk helicopters.
“Medical teams are working around the clock to ensure our soldiers receive the best care possible, "Anayron further said.
“We also ask the public to keep our wounded soldiers in their thoughts and prayers. Their recovery will take time, but their heroism will forever serve as an inspiration to our nation," he said.
Pursuit operations remain underway to neutralize the remaining threat.
