20 persons injured, 2 lost in Davao Region floods, landslides

DAVAO CITY- The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Davao Region has reported 22 casualties, including 20 injured persons and 2 missing due to significant flooding and landslide incidents caused by continuous rains from the Intertropical Convergence Zone affecting Mindanao.

OCD 11 reported Sunday that incidents occurred on December 26, 2024, at around 9:21 p. m particularly in the municipalities of  Davao Occidental, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental.

According to Karlo Alexei Puerto, OCD 11 Information officer said that all injured and missing individuals are residents of Davao Occidental caused by severe flooding. 

The report indicates that 13 areas in these provinces experienced flooding, although all reported floodwaters have since subsided. 

The agency's data showed, as of 6 a.m (Dec. 29) , 4,589 families or  18,452 individuals, were affected by the severe weather. Of the number, 760 families or 3, 3,236  persons are currently residing in seven evacuation centers (ECs) in these provinces while 30 families with 133 persons are staying outside these facilities.

OCD also reported that infrastructure damage has been significant, with 3 road sections and 4 bridges affected. At present one road section and two  bridges remain impassable in Davao Occidental. 

The power supply was also  interrupted in some  municipalities. 

Meanwhile,  547 houses were also reportedly  damaged in Davao Occidental: 234 completely destroyed and 313  partially affected. Another 13 infrastructures have also been damaged. 

OCD 11 has been actively monitoring these areaa for potential augmentation of response teams and relief assistance. 

The agency continues to coordinate efforts to ensure the safety and support of affected residents as recovery efforts are initiated.
