Councilor Ocampo's bloodletting initiative collects 59 bags of blood

DAVAO CITY - Up to 59 bags of blood were collected from the different blood donors during the bloodletting program spearheaded by the Office of the city's First District Councilor Tek Ocampo on Saturday, (Feb. 24) at the People's Park.

Blood donors were composed of personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard Southeastern Mindanao, Davao City Police Office, Task Force Davao, and Bureau of Fire Protection Fire District Office.

Also participating in the activity dubbed "Save a Life Donation Drive" were the staff of Ocampo's office and some volunteers.

Ocampo said his office has received numerous requests for blood supply and this prompted him to initiate the bloodletting.

The activity which is in partnership with the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) also aimed at augmenting the supply of Red Cross.

Blood donor recruiter officer- chapter service representative Rizh Abellano said that for every bag of blood, three lives are saved.

Abellano said blood donations are increasing beginning this February after experiencing a low supply during December 2023 and January 2024.

“Actually for the month of February we have a better situation compared to last year December and for January 2024 nga grabe ang scarcity because taas ang demand sa blood and yet there is no organization or any group nga nag-organize ug blood letting,” he said.

“Luckily pagsulod sa Pebrero, daghan nag -organize ug blood letting activity. Busa gina-awhag nato nga magpadayon kini ug everyday naay mga blood donation activities ug naay mga blood donors,” Abellano said.

He said, apart from the potential to save another person's life, blood donation is also a way of taking good care of one's health.

Based on studies, according to him blood donation is beneficial for the donor as it can prevent illnesses including hypertension and even other diseases since it can stimulate bone marrow and will lead to reproduction of new blood cells.
