Marilog bridge slumps; 5 dead, 2 injured

DAVAO CITY- Five construction workers died and two others were injured after an under construction bridge collapsed at around 3:30 pm Monday (July 24) at Sitio Kibakak, Brgy. Malamba, Marilog District, this city.

Captain Hazel Tuazon, the spokesman of Davao City Police Office identified the casualties as Jay Bangonan, 22, a mason and Rolando Abing, 40, laborer, both residents of Sitio Kibakak, Brgy. Malamba, Marilog District.

Other casualties were Cris Napao, 44, Jimboy Liga, 28, a boom truck operator, and Elmer Sayson, 44, a foreman.

Police identified two others who were injured as Meljay Bero, 29 and Jonathan Dispo, 3. They were rescued and brought to the Southern Philippines Medical Center by the responders from the City Disaster and Risk Reduction and Management Office.

A Marilog Police Station report said that ten workers of Bojus Sun Builders & Supply Corporation were having an installation at the side panel of the bridge using the boom truck positioned at the center of said bridge when it suddenly caved in.Three of the victims were able to survive the tragic incident.

Foreman, Dario Dispo, 42 a resident of Catalunan Grande said the bridge collapsed instantly and fell down into the river below with a height of about 60 feet.

Investigation is now underway to find out the cause of the incident.
