DepEd takes steps vs. contagious diseases among school children

DAVAO CITY (PIA) -- The Department of Education (DepEd) 11 has initiated strategies for children to have continuous learning despite being afflicted by contagious diseases like sore eyes.

This after a total of 52 school pupils have been afflicted by sore eyes in Davao Region.

DepEd 11 spokesperson Jeneilito Atillo, during the recent AFP-PNP Press Corps briefing, said that the learning process of pupils must not be hampered by a contagious disease like sore eyes.

To prevent the spread of the disease, he said that pupils with sore eyes are subjected to either modular or online modes of training to continue their learning.

“We have to adapt the systems like modular or online classes for those who cannot attend to their classes physically.  We have to take care of all other pupils by conducting normal classes,” he said.

Atillo noted the modalities of training have been tried and tested during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He added that from time to time, irritated eyes may cause the school-children to have blurry vision, however, he said that most often it may not usually cause lasting problems with vision.

“School-children with sore eyes are given medication by the school nurse or teachers  and two weeks to stay at home either online or through modular training modalities.  Home treatment often helps,” he said.

Atillo advised parents to follow up the eye care of their children by making sure to attend the appointment by the eye doctor.

“It goes with the warm weather, but let us not leave the cause to chances,” he said.  (JSGD/ Davao del Sur)
