Monique’s journey to this incredible achievement is a testament to her unwavering spirit, the support of her family, and the inclusive environment fostered by HCDC.
Born with congenital glaucoma, Monique faced complete blindness at the tender age of 16. Despite her visual impairment, she refused to let her dreams of education and becoming a professional educator fade away. However, numerous rejections from schools in her hometown of Tandag City and in Davao due to a lack of resources and trained teachers left her disheartened. It seemed as though her aspirations would remain unfulfilled.
Supported by her loving parents and elder sister, Monique’s search led her to the Davao School for the Blind, where she connected with fellow blind students who had faced similar rejections. Inspired by their resilience, she found a renewed determination to advocate for inclusivity in education.
The turning point came when Monique discovered the Holy Cross of Davao College.
The warm reception she received filled her with hope and ignited a belief that this institution would finally provide her with the opportunity to showcase her full potential as a student. Surrounded by compassionate classmates and schoolmates, Monique found herself in a nurturing environment that understood her unique needs. With the help of her peers, she navigated the campus with ease and accessed educational materials designed for visually impaired students. HCDC’s teachers, with their compassionate hearts, adapted their teaching methods to accommodate Monique and her blind classmates.
The warm reception Monique received at HCDC filled her with hope and ignited her belief that her blindness was not a weakness, but a strength that could be utilized to inspire others. With the unwavering support of the HCDC community, Monique resolved to apply for the prestigious Fulbright Global UGRAD program. Her goal was to refine her abilities and become an inspiration to both children with special needs and individuals without visible impairments, breaking down barriers and proving that determination knows no bounds.
Although Monique initially lacked confidence in her application, a visually impaired alumnus named Marco provided invaluable assistance, guiding her through the process and helping her prepare the necessary documents. With Marco’s guidance and the support of her professors, Ms. Micah Mae Judette Superio and Mr. SV Philip Merlas, Monique crafted two compelling essays and submitted her application in December 2022.
To her surprise, Monique received a call for an interview with distinguished alumni of the Global UGRAD program in January 2023. Despite her nervousness, she persevered, unaware of the success that awaited her. In February 2023, Monique received an email from the Philippine American Educational Foundation (PAEF), informing her that she had passed the interview and had been shortlisted.
The journey to the United States had become a reality for Monique. On May 30, 2023, she received an acceptance letter from the director of PAEF, confirming her selection as one of the nine Global UGRAD finalists out of 519 applicants throughout the Philippines. This incredible opportunity, she believes bestowed upon her by God, not only served to embellish her credentials but also opened doors for visually impaired children in Mindanao. Monique aimed to inspire them to set goals and pursue their dreams, believing that no one should be deprived of opportunities based on their abilities.
Monique firmly believes that schools do not necessarily need special education programs to provide an excellent education for students with special needs. What matters most is their willingness to open their doors and empower students to reach their full potential, regardless of their disabilities. HCDC exemplifies this commitment to inclusivity, granting students the freedom to excel in their respective fields.
As Monique prepares to embark on her journey to the United States in August 2023, she eagerly anticipates acquiring critical professional skills, immersing herself in new cultures and values, and further sharpening her leadership abilities. She sees her future success, bestowed through God’s grace, as an opportunity to inspire other students facing difficulties in their studies. Monique’s life experiences have taught her the importance of perseverance, encouraging others never to give up, regardless of the obstacles they encounter.
Representatives from Fulbright recently visited the Center for Linkages, Internationalization, and Language Studies (LINK-IN LS) of HCDC facilitated by Fulbright Alumna Mrs. Rioliza Molina from University of Southeastern Philippines. LINK-IN LS aimed to ensure Monique’s smooth transition and provide the necessary assistance for her requirements.
HCDC, through LINK-IN LS, has extended financial support to help Monique and her companion, Ms. Duran, travel to Manila.
Ms. Sheryl J. Urdaneta, the Head of HCDC LINK-IN LS, alongside other representatives, will attend the pre-departure reception in Manila on the 22nd, hosted by Fulbright – PAEF, as Monique prepares to represent HCDC in this prestigious program.
