592 cyclists join 1st Tour de Mati

DAVAO CITY---The City of Mati has successfully conducted its first sporting event in almost 2 years after the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

The Tour de Mati Theo Cup is a success as 592 biking enthusiasts from all over Mati joined in the early morning bike race last December 4, 2021. 

The said bike competition was first scheduled last May 16, 2021, but due to the threat from the Delta variant of the Coronavirus, it was temporarily shelved.

The City of Mati being under the Alert Level 2 status has made the holding of the event possible. 

Several categories were created depending on the age and the type of bicycle used. There were mountain bike and road bike categories for the ladies, the 15-39 age bracket, 40-49 age bracket, and the 50 age bracket. There is also a special category for Fat Boys. 

But the most-anticipated category however is the Open Category which is an 85-kilometer route starting from Mayor Francisco G. Rabat Park and Baywalk, then going to Dahican, then to Manguihay, then to Bobon going to Mayo then to the View Deck in Barangay Badas then will end in Bliss area in Barangay Sainz.

All those who joined the competition were mandated to be vaccinated before they were allowed entry to the venue. 

Winners received cash prizes as much as P10,000 for the champions of the Open Categories. Other winners also received trophies and medals for all finishers in all categories. 

After the bike race, the City of Mati LGU has scheduled another sporting event this month which is the skateboarding competition to be held at the newly-constructed Mati Skateboarding Park in Nazareno, Barangay Central. 

The minimum public health standard will be strictly observed in all events. (CIO MATI)
