5-day landslide contingency planning workshop launched

The Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) launched a five-day landslide incidence contingency planning and emergency response workshop at the Grand Men Seng Hotel.

The workshop which started Monday (Dec. 12) aims to prepare the city’s emergency responders and their respective offices in the event of landslides by helping them create their own contingency plans that will ultimately serve as their guide during such emergency scenarios.

A team of two to three emergency responders from the City Health Office, City Social Welfare and Development Office, City Engineer’s Office, City Agriculturist’s Office, City Environment and Natural Resources Office, City Veterinarian’s Office, Davao City Police Office, City Planning and Development Office, City Mayor’s Office, Bureau of Fire Protection, and the Philippine Red Cross participated in the workshop.

Each team is asked to craft their contingency plan on a landslide incident.

“They have to make plans before, during, and after the landslide,” CDRRMO chief Alfredo Baloran, in a report from the City Information Office.

The guest lecturers come from DRRM offices of other local government units who gained their expertise from first-hand experiences with landslide incidents

Baloran said since the city has been experiencing localized thunderstorms, ground shaking, significant rainfall during the La Niña season, compounded by the mountainous topography of the city, the landslide contingency planning workshop was deemed urgent and indispensable.

“Importante gyud ni siya kaayo kay there are some areas in Davao City that are very prone to landslides so kinahanglan gyud nato nga makahimo ta og contingency plans para mao na siya atoang guide during disasters, especially landslides,” Baloran said.
