Sambo Pilipinas president Paolo Tancontian is happy and proud of his daughter's latest accolade from the country's highest lawmaking body.
The elder Tancontian is very grateful for the senate's gesture and thanked them and the rest of the Filipino people for the support they have given to the Russian-originated sport.
"The Senators fully understood the direction of Pilipinas Sambo, and we are grateful to have supportive leaders who will propel us towards greater altitudes. We in Pilipinas Sambo are indebted with gratitude to all the people who believe in us," Tancontian said in a Facebook post.
Last September 21, Tancontian won a silver medal in the tough FISU University World Cup Combat Sports in Samsun, Turkey.
Tancontian won the medal in the women's Sambo +80 kilograms.
The Davaoena fell to home bet Dirgen Duygu, 1-2 in the finals, to settle for the silver medal.
In the semifinals, she beat Ukraine's Bielkova Marhayta.
On June 4 in Jouneih, Lebanon, Tancontian also won a gold medal in the 2022 Asian Sambo Championships.
In the event, Tancontian ruled the +80kg women’s sport sambo event in the tournament, which was participated in by some of the top sambo practitioners in Asia.
The University of Santo Tomas Judo varsity beat Arailym Abenova of Kazakhstan to win the coveted gold in the senior division.
It is the second gold for Tancontian in the same event since she also won the gold in the 2019 Asian Juniors Sambo in Mongolia.
Before the gold medal, Tancontian also won a silver medal at the 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Tancontian won second place in the +87kg Women's Kurash on May 11 in the SEA Games. (Romeo Braceros, Jr.)
