On November 17, the Wizards fell to Laguna Heroes 16-5 and 14.5-6.5 in their quarterfinal duel.
Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr. toppled National Master Aglipay Oberio after 62 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening, Grandmaster John Paul Gomez subdued Arnel Aton after 46 moves of Benoni defense, Michella Concio defeated Woman National Master Ella Grace Moulic after 43 moves of London System Opening, Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo trounced Anthony Mosqueda after 56 moves of Sicilian defense and Candidate Master Arjie Bayangat beat Lydon Sombilon after 35 moves of Queens Gambit Declined.
Davao tried acting in a new way, especially more quickly than before in the second encounter but the experience and flawless performance of the Heroes allowed them to gain the edge to finish the game, 14.5-6.5.
The loss is sad for the Wizards who had a six-game winning streak entering the quarterfinals.
Despite the loss, the Wizards can still keep their head high since they were able to reach the quarterfinals of the first professional chess league in the Philippines.
The quarterfinals stint of the Wizards is also a morale boost for the team should they decide to join another PCAP tournament next year. (Romeo Braceros Jr.)
