Davao City COVID deaths are mostly unvaccinated, says health expert

Majority of COVID-19 deaths in Davao City were unvaccinated individuals, a health official said.

The city has nine deaths based on the COVID-19 Task Force data from February 13 to 19, 2022. Of the number,  seven or 77 percent were unvaccinated, one vaccinated, and one for verification.

The City Information Office (CIO) in its report showed that four of the unvaccinated individuals were senior citizens or 60 years old and above and the remaining others were within the 30-39 age group, 40-49 age group, and 50-59 age group.

Vaccination Cluster Head Dr. Josephine Villafuerte urged the public to have themselves vaccinated against COVID-19 as this is a layer of protection against the disease.

She also encouraged the residents to get booster shots also to prevent the severe risk of the disease, allaying fears of death upon vaccination.

"There are no deaths due to vaccination and the majority of those who died had other diseases and were not vaccinated,” Villafuerte said recently.

A total of 1,296,684 Dabawenyos have already received their first doses while around 1,274,643 individuals are fully immunized.

"If you have been vaccinated with a booster, you have an additional layer of protection against severe cases. What we have now are mild and asymptomatic cases and that is the protection given by vaccines,” Villafuerte further said.

Of the fully immunized individuals, only 200,874 Dabawenyos or 15.76 percent have availed of the booster dose as of February 18.
