City Sports Division head Mikey Aportadera said the city government has allowed only some contact sports such as basketball, volleyball, football, and frisbee provided activities that follow the guidelines of the city’s COVID-19 Task Force.
However, sports tournaments and competitions are still banned, he said.
The City Information Office (CIO) in its report said that contact sports activities that will be allowed are meant for exercise purposes only.
"Our favorite games such as basketball, volleyball, football and frisbee we will resume them. Since we already have the guidelines crafted, we can resume,” Aportadera said.
Aportadera emphasized that the minimum public health guidelines should be followed even with the go-signal for contact sports.
“We hold everyone responsible in exercising vigilance against their exposure. If it is not one’s turn to play yet, or while waiting as a substitute, wear a mask,” Aportadera added.
He said that his office will announce once there will be a revision or additional regulations for the guidelines in contact sports.
Aportadera also emphasized that organizers shall give proposals on how to conduct events observing the minimum public health standards.
These proposals will then be elevated to the Public Safety and Security Command Center (PSSCC) and other offices concerned.
"If you intend to come up with an event, let me know, and propose how it will be conducted,” Aportadera said.
The sports chief also said he will assess and propose to the task force additional close contact sports for their approval.
